What polarization looks like online
Below are some real exchanges — reconstructed — that show how affective and ideological polarization play out across X and TikTok. Open the different categories in the accordian below to view posts. Each post is labeled by type to illustrate the difference between disagreeing on policy versus treating the other side as an enemy.
Immigration
"Open borders = open invitation for crime. If you disagree you simply don't care about American families. Period."
"Republicans don't want to secure the border. They want to dehumanize brown people. Call it what it is."
"POV: you try to have a nuanced take on immigration and BOTH sides come for you in the comments"
"Undocumented immigrants commit crimes at LOWER rates than citizens. This is not an opinion. It's data. Stop lying."
Gun Control
"Every time there's a tragedy, the left uses dead children as props to push their agenda. Disgusting. Don't touch the 2nd Amendment."
"The fact that you care more about your gun than kids' lives says EVERYTHING about you as a person."
"Australia did a gun buyback in 1996 and hasn't had a mass shooting since. The solution exists. We just lack the political will."
"Chicago has the strictest gun laws in the country and the most gun violence. Your gun control doesn't work. Period."
Climate Change
"Climate deniers have blood on their hands. Full stop. History will not be kind to you."
"Why do climate activists fly private and drive SUVs? Practice what you preach or I'm not listening. #hypocrites"
"Oil companies knew about climate change in the 1970s and paid scientists to lie about it for 50 years. This isn't a debate. It's a cover-up."
"They want to ban gas stoves now. First your car, then your stove, then your kids' future. This is not about climate. It's about control."
Media and Institutional Trust
"CNN, MSNBC, NYT — all propaganda. If you still trust mainstream media in 2024 you deserve to be lied to."
"Anyone who watches Fox News is already too far gone. Don't waste your breath trying to reach them."
"Social media banning accounts is literal censorship. If you support deplatforming you don't believe in free speech. Simple."
"The FBI, CIA, CDC, FDA — all compromised. At this point assume every institution is lying until proven otherwise."
